Gate Sigil Art Blog!

Writer: KM DonnellyKM Donnelly

As discussed in “What is a Gate Caller?” Gate is the only sigil with different versions according to the level the Caller has reached/is born into. Creating the base sigils was tricky since they needed to look like the three classes belong together, as well as specifically place the components to be visually pleasing. The Student and Superior Class sigils were the simplest as I could use the symmetry function; done, dusted, delivered. The Senior Class sigil with the three triangles was a whole different matter. As far as I can tell - and a little look around the internet says the same - there is no kaleidoscope option for Procreate, meaning that the guide sections for drawing multiple matching objects simultaneously are limited to halves, quarters, and eighths - and if anyone knows differently, do please drop me a message! Because using the other isometric guide gave the wrong aesthetic, and this whole thing was infuriating to place by hand! (Seriously - help me?)

But, I feel like I pulled it off!

The Dynamic Gate sigil art..! Woo! I enjoyed this one. As a writer of pagan-based fantasy and a lover of energy-type magicks, Gate Calling is the portal through which my own stories will merge with the Callers franchise. Much of the lore and laws of At’aasi crossover into the same mythology, and since that comes naturally to me thanks to my history, I had a pretty strong image of what I wanted to draw. Although there’s an update I hope to add soon, I think the base of the design is pretty solid.

Drawing the active Gate was a doddle, to be frank; luminance brushes, lightpen, quadrant symmetry canvas, curvy line, done. Then playing with depth, blurring, and layering to create the black elements within the portal. The background you see in the Dynamic is where the majority of the work came in; this was originally an experimental piece inspired by the scene which introduces TK.

Early on, it was decided that it wasn’t suitable for the Dynamic (although neither Xin nor I can remember why), but I kept working on it because I liked it. Once we had the Gate image, without background, I presented this to Xin again, showing him how the pieces look together. So now, with his approval, I present to you the Dynamic Gate Sigil.
