What is a Plant Caller?

Writer: Xin GravesXin Graves

Plant is … simple. Aaron Thorn’s design was simple. The Planter aspect of the magic system is relatively simple. The ideology and history of Selva and its people are comparatively simple when measured against the other Essence Forms. However, simple does not mean basic. For, while developing the powers of Stormers helped us develop our magic system as a whole, it was Plant that was at the root of our naming system. Mira Holt, Valon Durey, Kai Ten, Nasha Leone, and Koren Laris, had all been named before we had even considered having a naming system. However, it was when we conceived and rationalized the name Aaron Thorn that we began to think about patterns in the names of other Essence forms, and how such patterns would have developed within their respective cultures. In a sense, naming Aaron helped us come to the same conclusion IRL that Dr Gumo suggested in-universe:

“Unlocking Plant will unlock them all.”

Plant may be the simpler of the Essence Forms. But, it is that simplicity that brings a necessary balance to an otherwise largely chaotic world. Trees are quiet and peaceful, but strong and sturdy. We hope we convey that in every aspect of Plant’s design. From their Sigil to their moveset, Planters represent nature in its truest state. Of all Essence Forms, Planters’ abilities are most affected by and most able to interact with their environment. While Selvari warriors can generate various plants straight out of their bodies - growing vines, flowers, wood, and other foliage - most Planters manipulate the foliage around them. Elites can do both, and usually on a larger scale or with greater precision. Wait til you read about the Selvari sunrise.

We want you to be mystified by Gate's eccentricities, amazed by Storm's spectacle, and to awe at the sheer scale of Star. But, with Plant, don't be afraid to stop and smell the roses.
