“What is a Star? And, what can it do?”
That’s basically the question at the heart of the plot of Callers: Emergence, and really Callers as a whole. The entire saga is effectively Mira living out her own personal Metroidvania, unveiling old abilities and discovering – or developing – brand new techniques. In-universe, VERY little is known about the powers of a Star Caller. For pretty much all their recorded history, Star Callers have only ever been known to do one thing: explode. Any knowledge of them is mostly passed down through secondhand accounts from survivors and former peers fortunate enough to be beyond the blast radius. Folk would tell of the explosion so bright, it lit up the night sky and blinded all who gazed upon it, like a star going Supernova. They’d also tell of the massive crater they’d leave behind.
IRL, the Star Caller is a love letter to anime. The rambunctious orphan with the rare forbidden and/or forgotten power thought to have been hunted to extinction. She’s Naruto, Aang, Goku, etc. But, she’s more than a well worn trope. Her powers were designed with the might and scale of celestial bodies in mind, with elements of the science behind light, heat, and gravity serving as the basis of her moveset. She is meant to feel immensely powerful, but wildly unstable, needing the more experienced around her to help her reach a potential none of them ever could.
There’s a ton more to the Star Caller for readers to discover. From her incomparable powers to her impact on the political landscape of the world, to her place in the secret society trying to change said world – for better or worse. Throughout the series, you’ll learn the secret of how a Star Caller is bred, why all Star Callers are female, and why even those who side with Mira feel the need to temper her growth. We believe readers will have a fun time discovering what the Star Caller is and what she can do.
