What is a Storm Caller?

Writer: Xin GravesXin Graves

When we first came up with Storm Callers, it was with one principle goal: Edgy Badasses with Dope Powers Because Reasons. But, of all the Essence Forms, it was the one with the shallowest inception that drove us to dive the deepest into our magic system and design philosophy. It was through figuring out the rules of how Stormers worked that we began to break down and iron out the rules and systems for every other Essence Form. From the very beginning, the Callers were at the center of every other aspect’s design. The world of Eodiena may very well revolve around the Star, but it is the Storm that shakes things up.

Storm Callers summon weather anomalies and terrestrial disruptions. Their abilities fall under at least one of five “elements”, four of which are introduced in Emergence. From a light rain or a gentle breeze to gale force winds and lightning strikes, Stormers are capable of some of the most destructive forces on Rin, second only to Star in terms of raw power and scale. Koren Laris, the main Stormer in the story (and initially based on yours truly), once destroyed half a forest in a single attack.

“Why do you think Stormers fight alone?”

Storm Essence is volatile, proving difficult for even highly skilled Stormers to control. In fact, none truly do. Storms are summoned through rifts in the sky or by agitating existing conditions. The strong ones can call multiple elements at once, and the really good ones can even guide their storms with considerable effort. However, once the storm is called, it doesn't take sides. It just destroys. And, the only safe place then is in the eye of the storm. If that.

Storm is my favourite Essence Form, because of course it is! Lol. I love picturing the insane attacks, and it was exciting to tie their powers to both their genetics and personalities in what I hope were meaningful ways! But, hey. You tell me.
